Nick’s Hong Kong Adventure

Not a whole lot has happened since the last update. I have been engaging in lots of social activities mostly with the other exchange students, but I did sit in on a game of Mah Jong with some Chinese guys on my floor (room 103); Linda, Peter, etc. etc... (yes, Linda knows that he has a girls name). I have also been doing a little more exploring and having some quiet time as well. I have come to appreciate that a lot again since moving to this loud busy city, and having a room mate again.

Matt (from upstate NY) and I went into town on Sunday looking for a normal notebook to no avail. This is still a foreign land! The only notebooks we found were really small or flimsy or colored like easter or something. I was also looking for a trekking backpack for traveling around these parts (and hopefully to Europe upon completion of school). I found this pack which came with a sleeping bag good to 10C and a sleeping mat for HK $510 (USD ~65)! What a deal! I am still pretty excited about it.

Classes started yesterday and this is a copy of my course schedule:

HUMA385 - Classical Chinese Philosophy (hopefully fills a literature requirement)

IELM310 - Integrated Production Systems (manufacturing control, supplier/distributor relations, etc etc. technical elective)

ECON110 - Introductory Microeconomics (pre-requisite for Business/Management minor)

MECH691X - Precision Machining (technical elective)

I saw some pretty crazy demonstrations for what seemed to be student government elections this morning (see movie: CampusElections).

I have also been working on prioritizing the places that I would like to travel to. I haven’t come to any concrete plan yet, so more as it happens. I just met another exchange student today that extended her stay for a semester because she had so much fun and wants to keep traveling.

Thanks for checking up on me and drop me a line any time! brogr004@umn.edu
