I met my HKUST 'buddy' Jenny Lam and some of her friends for the first time yesterday. They were all very nice and helpful and surprised at all of the stuff that I had figured out on my own since my arrival.
I then went out to get my China Visa after class, got to the Visa center and realized that I didn't have the receipt required to pick up the visa! I decided to try anyways since I was 9/10ths of the way there and they were pretty good about letting me get my passport/China visa with my MN drivers license!
I wasn't sure what to do then so I sat down on a park bench and took out my Hong Kong City guide, which I always bring with me into the city. I ended making up my own walking tour (on which I saw the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and the convention center among other things) and finally made it up to the peak for a cool dusk/night transition! (see pictures) Doing all of this by myself was nice because I didn’t have to worry about anyone else’s agenda.
Then Matt and I went out with Jamie (a local HKer) and some of her friends to the 'World Carnival' which was a bunch of rides and carnival games, none of which we were able to win (damnit!). It was a good time but Matt and I headed off for ladies night at Skitz to meet up with some other HKUSTers and to gain an early (free) entrance. No luck. So we wandered around Wan Chi (the infamous red light district). We were enticed(/dragged) into one place by the $10 beers, which I promptly chugged and left because we were the only two people in there, and these Thai girls would NOT leave us alone.
After I found a pretty neat bar and made some more local friends while watching a horse race, we eventually partied the night away at 'Skitz' with all of the other international students. I kept myself from getting too drunk seeing as I had all of my tourist equipment (and my PASSPORT) with me.

It has also just developed that I will be going to the Philippines over the Chinese New Year with three Dutch folks and a New Yorker (three of the group are featured in the 4th picture from the bottom on the right; Matt, Annick, and Claudia).
